What to expect during a Mizan Therapy session.

Before we even get to the treatment, many of you want to know how it works, what’s involved, what happens during the treatment and what maintenance is required. In this post, I’m going to cover what happens when you come for your first session.

Prior to the session, you will complete a fairly lengthy consultation form.  This is so important as it gives me a good idea about your history. Don’t worry. Some clients don’t want to complete the whole lot, and this is why we talk everything through in person.

You can print the consultation out, complete it at home and bring it with you. If you prefer, you can complete it online and send it to me by email.

The first session is always at least 2 hours. I never rush you and we take our time to discuss your history.

This starts with your main concerns and your health goals.

We go back and look at what might have influenced where you are now. Sometimes it’s medical.

Sometimes it’s emotional. Sometimes it’s physical. Most of the time, it’s a combination of all those things and I make sure I give you the time and space to talk about whatever comes up for you.

Once we’ve had our initial chat (and of course cuppa), I give you some privacy to get ready for the session.

I always ask you to bring some comfy clothing such as leggings and a t-shirt to wear during the treatment.

You can undress down to your underwear if you’re more comfortable. Your modesty is protected at all times though and you’re covered with soft, cotton sheets and blankets. I always switch on the electric blanket too so you’re extra cosy!

Once the treatment starts, it’s around an hour and because I explain in advance what will happen, it’s an hour for you to relax, focus on your breathing, meditate or visualise – whatever you feel comfortable with.

One aspect we do talk about in advance is what you are letting go of through this process.

We all have baggage whether it’s physical or emotional.

Mizan therapy is a gift that allows you to process emotions, trauma (big or small), and work with your body’s natural healing ability. After all, all our body is ever trying to do is heal. Once you’ve verbalised all of this, it’s amazing how much healing you can experience just in the first session.

The treatment starts on your feet.

10 minutes of reflexology focussing on the pelvic area and reproductive organs.

During this time, heated lavender bags are gently warming your upper and lower abdomen.

By the time we get to the deep abdominal massage, most clients are gently snoozing.

Some gentle lymphatic drainage on the front of the legs, pelvic alignment through gentle body rocking and deep breathing are all part of the first half of the treatment. Your skin is covered for most of this, apart from the tummy massage.

You will then turn over to lie face down. I always make sure you’re super comfy before working on the back. Your comfort is key for me. If you’re in the optimum position, I find I can leave you to relax for at least 10 minutes after the treatment because you’re in a deep state of relaxation by then.

The back work includes the sacral and the lower to mid back. These nerves all feed into the front of the body and help with encouraging the flow of fresh blood, vitality and healing to the reproductive organs.

Gentle body rocking, deep percussion and pressure points allow tension release and aim to balance the body systems.

Once the physical treatment is complete and you’ve had your additional 10 or 15 minutes of ‘snooze’ time, there’s normally another herbal tea waiting for you and we have a brief chat about aftercare.

I’ve always found that the end of a deeply relaxing and intensive treatment is not the best time to talk about homecare in detail. Most clients are in a different zone by this time, so we have a brief chat and then a follow-up chat after a few days.
